Video interview for The Manchester College

Today I was interviewed by Pete Whitfield from The Manchester College, via iChat. We talked mainly about mastering - what it is, how I got started and what gear I use, and what skills are necessary, but also a little about music and social media - blogging, Twitter etc.

I will also be answering questions (if there are any!) from students at the college all this week on their forum. Thanks to Pete for inviting me.

Hi Ian

I am a student at Manchester College and have just viewed your interview with Pete. Thanks first of all for the insight as to how you started as a mastering engineer. Its often quite difficult to gain reliable 1st hand information on the profession aside from shelling out for literature!

I have a couple of questions that I hope you would be able to answer?

In one mastering book I have, it quite weightily suggests that frequency ear training is a great excercise. CD packages are available which cover this but they tend to be expensive. Is this something you devoted much time to or did you 'train your ears' through practical experience (studio work, live sound reinforcement)?

I noticed in the interview that you started by engineering demos and writing to companies in order to gain work experience. I too am starting out by engineering demos for a couple of local bands I know but as regards vocational experience is writing off to companies still the best thing to do? From the perspective of someone who works for the type of company I would be writing to, is there anything else you could suggest that might help my application for voluntary work experience? or is good old written requests and perseverance the best and only way?

Thanks again for the advice thus far!

Regards

Luke Smith
